His-Panic

A Beautiful American Family

Demographics is destiny, and ours looks pretty good

Joel Kotkin has written another great piece entitled, Demography vs. Geography: Understanding the Political Future. I highly recommend you go read the whole thing. He analyzes trends as they relate to voting patterns. Minorities are increasing (bad for Republicans?), and liberal sinkholes like New York and California are losing congressional seats to successful conservative states like Texas and Utah.

One disappointment:  Professor Kotkin accepts liberal premises and language regarding minorities in America, and he off-handedly repeats them:
The Latinization of America, even if immigration slows, is now inevitable. Only 12 percent of the U.S. population in 2000, Hispanics will become almost 25 percent by 2050. As more Latinos integrate into society and become citizens, they are gradually forming a political force. Since 1990, the number of registered Latino voters swelled from 4.4 million to nearly 10 million today.

Anglos—60 percent of whom supported Republican congressional candidates in 2010—are beginning to experience an inexorable decline. In 1960, whites accounted for more than 90 percent of the electorate; today, that number is down to 75 percent. It will drop even more rapidly in the coming decades, with white non-Hispanics expected to account for barely half the nation’s population by 2050.
The burgeoning Hispanic (or Asian, or pick your minority) population is not the threat to "whites" that gleeful liberals keep shouting it is

In the creepy progressive lexicon, “minority” is anyone who is not 100% white.  If a white man marries a Cuban woman and they have three kids, they have just produced three Hispanics. By definition, they cannot produce “white” or “Anglo” kids. This eugenic-tinged standard is why we keep hearing that whites will be a minority one day.

It's useful to recall that 100 years ago, the ancestors of these "whites" were deplored as Irish, Italian and Slavic hordes that would demographically swamp America.  These people of yesterday, like Hispanics today, assimilated, thanks in large part to our common cultural roots of Western Christendom.  Our nation-scape is populated by families with Hispanic names like Robles, Nelson and Sandoval who speak no Spanish.  German is still America's largest ethnic group, yet you never hear it spoken.  These Americans may have artifacts from their family's distant past:  A German Bible, pictures, or faded letters in a now-incomprehensible language, but they are Americans.

Hispanicizing America, or Americanizing Hispanics?

Minorities intermarry and assimilate.
Among all newlyweds in 2008, 9% of whites, 16% of blacks, 26% of Hispanics and 31% of Asians married someone whose race or ethnicity was different from their own.

White-Hispanic couples accounted for about four-in-ten (41%) of such new marriages; white-Asian couples made up 15%; and white-black couples made up 11%. (PEW 2010 Study)
Get that?  Whites are the least likely to marry outside their race.  Meanwhile, two times as many blacks, three times as many Hispanics, and almost four times as many Asians marry outside their racial/ethic group.  And when they do, it is overwhelmingly to whites.

So, we could just as easily talk about the Anglicization of Hispanics

Racial discussions like this are disturbing in so many ways.  Sorting and analyzing and applying progressive purity tests are horrible relics best resigned to the Woodrow Wilson era.  Another condescension is to assume that Hispanics form a politically and culturally homogeneous block. They do not. Voting trends prove it, and anyone who knows some Mexicans as well as some Puerto Ricans and South Americans can tell you that when you meet one Hispanic you definitely have not met them all.

All this talk is making me hungry for tacos and egg rolls.  America will not be overrun by foreigners.  The data shows that we will end up looking more and more like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and his family, and that's a pretty good future to look forward to.

Silver, This is an interseting post but believe it is not so much as how Americans look but rather how we act and right now that is not a good harbinger to our collective future at all.

Very astute observation, Christopher. I wholeheartedly agree.

People living in the shadows do not assimilate well, and therein lies the problem.

Isn't it funny how the "colorblind" liberals focus in on skin color, while blue collar white conservative Christopher gets to the real issue?

If we had 20 million Illegal Muslim immigrant I would agree that we were in trouble, if only because our cultures are incompatible.

But it's 20 million Hispanics. History has proven that they assimilate well into our society.

The problem is getting the illegals out of the shadows, and that's an immigration debate.

Successful? Utah is tiny and moot, but Texas?

How, exactly, do you, I wonder, measure the success of a state?

Jersey, I'm pretty sure that when a state has to issue IOU's to taxpayers for their tax refunds, that state is obviously troubled and far from successful.

If it wasn't for the gov'ment they so decry, Texans would be wondering why they ever vote GOP.

That's enough about Texas.

My wife is Asian and when it came time to registrar the kids for school, I would alternate the race every other year. Sadly I never heard a peep from the schools. Party poopers.

Jersey: Texas alone has added half of all new jobs in this country since the downturn in 2008. People are voting with their feet and leaving liberal disaster zones for greener pastures. Texas is adding people and must add jobs to go along with it.

I love how liberals can't point to some good and positive liberal example, but must instead tear stuff down and sling mud to detract from their failures.

OD:
Stories like yours actually give me hope. People talk about the government confiscating guns one day, and my reply is I don't think they keep good enough records to even know where they all are!

And thank God for that!

My only concern with the multicultural melting pot is that many immigrants - and the Mexicans are (at least in my neck o' the woods) the very worst - are not very conscientious about integrating in a reasonable fashion when it come to language.

Asian or Pacific Islander immigrants land on U.S. soil with a keen understanding of both spoken and written English. And from what I've seen, the same can be said for Indian and Middle Eastern immigrants. But many Mexicans neither have nor make any attempt to acquire more than a passing grasp of English.

So for example, while there are no street signs written in Spanish, the DMV must provide Spanish forms. If you can't read and write English well enough to get your driver's license, how the hell are you gonna navigate the roads?

While it seems mandatory that nearly every government form and (public) document be duplicated in Spanish, imagine the uproar if Islamic immigrants demanded likewise treatment!!

Why do we coddle these bastards?! The choice should be simple: Learn the language (both written and spoken) of the society that you're integrating yourself into or just stay your ass home!

When my wife & I were prepping for a month-long trip to Russia, we studied our butts off to learn enough Cyrillic to limp along. We took a class at the local university. We had flash cards. We listened to Pinsleur audio lessons. Were we proficient? Oh hell no, but we knew enough to navigate the Moscow Metro subway on our own, fill out forms, buy groceries, shop for trinkets, order meals at restaurants, and interact (painfully slowly, sometimes) with locals. I'm not suggesting that we did anything extraordinary or heroic - we just made an effort to fit in and survive in a foreign society for a few weeks. Why shouldn't permanent immigrants to America be expected to do likewise?

Amen Rob! I agree for the most part they do not want to integrate otherwise they would not be able to use the excuse that they "No Habla Ingles" Reminds me of Heartbreak Ridge with Clint Eastwood when he took over a flunky platoon the spanish guy didn't want to follow orders so he say "No Habla Ingles"
and Eastwood grabs him by the collar and says "If we're in the battlefield I don't want to get my ass shot off because you "don't Habla"

Lisa: Great scene from a great movie!

I agree Rob. You do business with the government in this country, you do it in English.

Rob said...

By the way, I'll admit that some small part of why we threw ourselves into learning enough Russian to limp along was just our gung-ho enthusiasm, but the key thing is that Moscovites don't pander to foreigners.

If you can't speak (or at least attempt to speak) their language, then you are cut off. If you can't read enough Cyrillic to get by, there isn't anyone willing (or able) to hold your little hand. We struggled in the subway and desperately, unsuccessfully tried to find someone, anyone who could speak English to assist us. No luck.

America needs to adopt that attitude towards those who can't habla. Sure, make classes freely available to those would would like to learn, but that's it.

The company (a county entity) I work for went to great lengths (and expense) to craft a mirror image of their website in Spanish a few years ago. Now c'mon, if you're savvy enough to run a computer (or now a smartphone) to browse to websites, then you're damn well capable to reading English.

You can ask Silverfiddle, when we were in South America we spoke Spanish. Why? Because it's their country and they didn't habla Ingles. Either I polished up my Tex-Mex or I didn't go anywhere, eat anything of even get a haircut. I remember when my wife went for her immigration interview, proficient in English was one of the criteria.

Yeah OD, we did pretty good for a couple of rednecks.

I work with one of the guys who closed up the Mil Group. The end wasn't pretty.

????
Love the article but this bit made no logical sense.

Silverfiddle said...

Anon: Sure it's logical. Whites are the overwhelming majority. Only if all the groups were the same size would this not make sense.
