Good on the NRA for defending our Second Amendment rights. Bad on them for squashing the First Amendment in the process.
Things really got heated when I excoriated our NRA for toying with the idea of endorsing Harry Reid. Reid Voted for the Brady Bill, Erik Erikson reminds us. Politico explains how politics in America makes such bedfellows possible:
First, Reid has a fairly favorable lifetime rating from the NRA. And then there’s the $61 million for the Clark County Shooting Park, earmarked by Reid, which led Wayne LaPierre, chief executive officer of the National Rifle Association, to call Reid “a true champion” of the Second Amendment at an event commemorating the opening of the 2,900-acre park in April. (Politico)So Reid bribed the NRA with $61 million of taxpayer money, and they in return call this petty statist "a true champion." Disgusting.
Legislation as a Money-Making Scam
It is bad enough that congress exempts itself from its own laws. It is a truly despotic government that enacts laws threatening our individual liberties in order to sell those rights back to the highest bidder. This is extortion--a sickening theft of our birthright.

Natural Rights are down the toilet. The Kagan hearings confirmed that. Congress can make us eat our veggies and progressive jurists like Kagan will stand aside because they see nothing wrong. And she will be confirmed in a cakewalk.
If government can make a free man play “mother may I” in order to keep firearms, it can also make a free woman ask permission to exercise her God-given right to free speech. Once we open negotiations on our fundamental rights, we’ve already lost. Government ceases to be the protector of our rights and now becomes the gatekeeper, telling us which rights we may exercise, when and where.

I quit over this. I have zero tolerance for people I send my money to, and they've become self preservationists. Not playing both sides with my money, I'm afraid.
It shows how the entire system is corrupted with too much special interest money, and that goes both ways. WE have to figure out a way to take the money out of the picture.
We shouldn't need the NRA to protect anything, that's what the dang congress is supposed to do.!! Instead they protect the highest bidders.
One action by We The People can fix all of this: term limits. Get the lifetime political scalawags out of office, and start electing folks who stand for the rule of law, and not how much bacon they can bring home.
Fredd; The problem with term limits is the civil service congressional staffers, who stay for a lifetime.
We would end up being ruled by this mandarin class.
My solution is to take all illegitimate functions away from the federal government.

As to Fredd's solution and Silver, your pointing out the dillema with it you are both right.
I would only add that one as to crawl before they walk i.e.; 1st Term limits, 2nd clean house literally by disolving and banning unions from all three branches of the federal government.
With the political climate as it is this can be achieved.

There can't be ANY compromise in that area. When you compromise with evil, only evil wins.
I am rather surprised that the NRA would even contemplate voting for Reid. What a huge shame.

I have always been a proponent of term limits. However, I had a real insightful conversation with a fellow conservative, who reminded me about the challenges of basically a "lame duck congress". Would these people basically write insane laws due to the fact that they are basically not accountable during the next election. Just something to think about..there must be another solution.
Organizations, associations, politicians, and every individual is capable of the worst possible behavior, including accepting money from whomever is willing to part with it. Hell, I’d accept $61 million from Harry Reid, and share it with my friends. Actually, doing that is the only way I can have any friends. My question is, do we expect too much from people and groups of people who we know are incapable of perfection?
May I also comment on the above comment? What makes us right wrote, in part, “Would these people basically write insane laws due to the fact that they are basically not accountable during the next election…?” My good blog-friend at Political Yen and Yang assures me that we could not possibly do worse by tossing all these bums out of office, no matter how incompetent their replacements might be; besides, he argues, we can toss them all out of office again two years after that. Personally, I think we should accept the advice of George Washington, who commenting about deserters, suggested the problem will not abate until he could shoot one or two of them. I don’t think we should shoot politicians; shooting cow turds has never been effective in getting rid of cow turds. But I do think we should put a few of them on trial for treason. That might help raise the bar of Congress critters.

We were not arguing but discussing healthly about Harry Ried. NRA supports those who supports guns rights. I live in New Mexico and Bill Richardson has the NRA support. How many groups support specific candidates do to their platform. Many and that is way politics goes.
The NRA is a non-partisan, non-profit, 501(c)(4) organization, chartered to defend second amendment rights and to promote marksmanship, gun-safety, hunting, and self-defense. As such they are free to endorse any candidate that promotes that position, be he Republican, Democrat, or whatever.
When they diverge from their chartered function and involve themselves in other matters they are doing a disservice to their dues paying members. As such a member, if you are responsible member, you are free to vote with your dues and membership and support another organization more inline with you political goals and viewpoints.
Unless of course you absolutely must have that shiny sticker for the backend of your vehicle.

My political goals and viewpoints include a no-compromise approach to my right to defend myself, so my dues go exclusively to Gun Owners of America (as I have mentioned).
