TSA is a Joke - Privatize It

Thousands Standing Around has earned some new nicknames:

The Security Asshats
Touching and Scanning at Airports
Touching Sensitive Areas
The Sleazy Administration

Trust them, we're told.  They're professionals.  As if that were a legitimate excuse for having our 4th Amendment rights violated.

Remember when a TSA slug in Florida got arrested for beating down a fellow TSA slug?

Why?  They were trying out the full-body porn scanner on one another, and one guy's package was embarrassingly small.  The others teased him incessantly, leading to the subsequent parking lot beat-down.

Our idiotic, suicidal and apologetic government refuses to profile, or even deny citizenship to terrorists, so we all must now be treated as criminals and strip searched.  Welcome to progressive America!

This useless bureaucratic carbuncle known as TSA was the price George Bush had to pay to democrats in exchange for implementing real security measures like hunting terrorists down to their fetid hidey-holes, torturing them, and killing them.

Time to disburse the Thousands Standing Around
John Stossel relates a conversation he had with Israeli security consultant Rafi Sela.  Israel privatized airport security in 1995, and there has not been one hijacking.  Sela points out the inherent flaw in the TSA model:
"The problem in America is that from day one the US decided to hold the stick on both sides. Which means it's both the regulator and the operator, which is unheard of in [Israeli] security… [here it] is all done by private contractors.”
Get it?  Our government provides the "security" and also evaluates its compliance.  Wouldn't you love a gig like that?
According to a leaked 2004 TSA report obtained by USA Today, inspectors packed hidden bomb materials in everyday carry-ons to test security. Screeners at Los Angeles International Airport missed about 75% -- but San Francisco screeners, who work for a private company instead of the TSA, missed only 20%.

In their publicly available report, the TSA concluded that “privately screened airports have met the standard articulated in ATSA that contract screening operations perform at the same level or better than federally screened operations.”

Again, it’s because you can fire a bad contractor, but you can’t fire the government.
So a better model would be to privatize security operations and shrink TSA down to a small bureau of security professionals who set the standards contractors must follow and monitor and test them for compliance.

The TSA is a joke. A dangerous joke.

I've been scrutinized, scanned, pulled aside -- harassed, really. Yet, I've seen Arabs ignored by the TSA and stroll onto a flight.

So far, we've been lucky with the airliners. We can't be lucky for much longer, IMO.

When all common sense goes out the window because of political correctness, this is what we have left. Government has gotten too big for its britches and we all suffer for it. Government cannot be all things to all people...look at Greece.

Forget the 2004 report that compares TSA to the private security workforce at SFO. Instead, go to SFO and watch and talk to the screeners that work there. See first hand what that privatized workforce is capable of. To a man, every single screener would rather be part of the TSA workforce.

And this is why I have chosen to drive or take trains. I sincerely hate flying and now with good reason.

I think it is humiliating.

agree TSA is a joke, there are always people standing around doing nothing. Privatization is definitely the answer, or at least an improvement to a screwed up bureaucracy.

However, I will say that I am not against the new scanners one bit. If someone wants to take a peak at the package, than so be it. If I am safer for it, then let's get it on!

I want to land where I am supposed too!

WMUR: But where does it end? We are all treated as criminals because the government refuses to discriminate.

Leticia: I'm with you. I absolutely hate flying and never do it voluntarily.

Sad that you had to degrade your post with adding the picture.

It's a few years back, but check out Penn Jillette's run in with air port security.

Check Maggie's Notebook. I wonder why we find it more convenient to spend a gazillion dollars on all this equipment, when all we need to do is profile those who are likely to blow up airplanes. Hint: not 3-years old children, or 90-year old retired Nuns.

Heh. Heh.

Real Americans were in such a hurry to launch the global war on terror, invade Afghanistan, overthrow Saddam Hussein, water board, ramp up the extraordinary renditions and hand over our civil liberties under the guise of the 'Patriot Act' they didn't seem to notice there would be blowback.

Inconvenience a few 'Real Americans' and look at the bitching and moaning.

Wait until the TSA begins the cavity searches there at the boarding gate.

Arthur is an example of why we find most liberals so repellent.

When we see the light on an issue like personal liberties, we just get crap like this.

You progressives didn't hate the patriot act because it violated constitutional liberties, you hated it because a republican was in the White House.

I don't know if you caught the Glenn Beck show this evening, but supposedly, the reason why the head of TSA won't use profiling or other methods like Israel, is because he is on the board of the company that makes the scanners being used. Also up until two days ago, George Soros owned the lions share of stock in the same company, but sold it off when people started complaining about the clarity of the images.

Safe to say that I will never fly again...and I used to love it.

And if there were somewhere I needed to get, and could only get there by flying, I wouldn't get there.

But that's just me.

FBS are outrageous, unnecessary and the product of minds that cannot put together a single rational thought (think Arthurstone above - speaking of "Real Americans" as though they aren't).

Arthurstone said...

Thanks Joe.

It's nice to know that when we visit places worth visiting you won't be there.

Airport security was privatized... Then 19 highjackers stole four planes and changed our world. Privayization is not the answer to everything.

Silverfiddle said...

Airport security had always been privatized before 9/11.

9/11 was a failure of intelligence, not airport security, since the terrorists brought nothing forbidden on the planes.

Try again, Joe. What is the answer then?

the problem, dear WATSON,is not the touchy-feally pat-down or porno scan---but the fact that these same old tired guard faces keep rotating through the airport as this-or-that security, no better training, no defensive big guns present in case of a surge attack (A VERY REAL POSSIBILITY WITH MASS CASUALTIES!)-and here I sit-a well trained thirty year service guard, with sub-machine guns----not being there----just in case! You are getting scanners, but not protection. The airlines are doin' it on the cheap, and paying CHERTOFF big bucks-just like WACKENHUT once did-to gobble up the contract money---and it is only a marginal hoax-nobody takes it seriously-least of all, the terrorists!

The public wants to see UZI'S ON "MANLY MEN"-not GIRLIE MEN WITH TICKLE SCAN WANDS, OR PERVERTS TAKING NAKED-TYPE PICTURES OF PEOPLE. SECURITY IS HAVING CONTINGENCY PLANS CLOSE TO THE VENUE---SWAT AND MARINES ARRIVING TEN MINUTES AFTER A GRENADE AND MACHINE-GUN RAKING---IS A LITTLE LIKE SHUTTING THE BARN DOOR AFTER A HORSE BOLTS-----BUT REASONING WITH "HOMELAND DISGRACE"-IS USELESS. THEY KNOW BEST-AT LEAST UNTIL ANOTHER VARIATION OF 9-11 OCCURS (WINK-WINK...)

Scanners, alarms, and cameras-add that to "tits on a bull"-and make the public pay for all of it again and again-----and it protects you from---what? That's right-nothing! I don't often go out into the streets, here in MIAMI-but when I do-I take any armament I choose-some highly regulated, some just big and nasty. The protectors of the public, such as the airport-should also be very well armed-and not with little wands shaped like LUKE SKYWALKER'S LIGHT WAND LASER! Train the armed guys well, and I can almost guarantee it will present the right image and stand-by defense for your airport security dollar!
