How Israelis Secure Airports

The federal government's ham-fisted approach to "security" betrays an intellectual bankruptcy.  We let anybody and everybody in, and then treat loyal Americans like suspicious criminals.

Independent foreign correspondent Michael Totten explains how Israel does it.  But first, he briefly describes the sinkhole our unimaginative security "experts" have fallen into.
While armies tragically tend to fight the last war, the TSA looks for the item the most recent terrorist used.

Terrorists have yet to use the same weapon twice, and the TSA isn't even looking for whatever they'll try to use next. I can think of all sorts of things a person could use to wreak havoc on a plane that aren't banned. Security officials should pay less attention to objects, and more attention to people.
He goes on to explain how Israelis profile and categorize people, subjecting the more suspicious to polite but rigorous questioning.  Totten is all for this approach even though he himself falls into the suspicious category every time he travels through Israel because of his extensive Middle Eastern travels.

While we have had various terrorist incidents since 9/11, Israel has had none.

I agree; we should be copying Israel's model for securing the airlines.

What galls me about this invasive patting or nude scanners, which I consider to be damn near if not sexual assault, is that THEY are doing it to law abiding American citizens for the sake of security while leaving our southern border wide open to any illegal or jihadi who wishes to stroll across it.

Hey! You do as TSA says! You are their subjects, and they can do with you as they will.

Don't give me that stuff about "individual freedom" and "invasion of privacy."

You have no privacy except that which the government decides you have at any given moment.

We are a people of the government, by the government and for the government.

As for Israel...their success is no indication that they know what they're doing.

And our failure is no indication that we don't.

(Hold it...I have to get my tongue disloged from my cheek.)

Of course Israel has a fairly clear idea as to the profile of its enemies... Happy Thanksgiving!

The author uses "profile" and "categorize" very loosely in this context. The Israelis use a complex algorithm. It's not nearly as simple as just picking some 'Arab-looking' dude out of a line. We need a complex system, but Americans tend to look at things black-and-white, all-or-nothing, with-us-or-against-us, etc...

We can deal with our airports if we are judicious and above popular stupidity.

I can see it now. The next one'll either be the "rectal bomber" or the "saline implant bomber". And, yes, then we'll all have to have to undergo colonoscopies and/or mammographies.

Naturally. Unfortunately, porno scanners and grope-downs are not it.

Anybody that is serious about stopping ANY threat will PROFILE, PROFILE, PROFILE.

Nobody is talking about just picking out some "Arab-looking" fellow. That's a straw man.
